September 2 is Victory over Japan Day, or VJ Day!
September 2 marks the anniversary of Japan’s formal surrender to the Allies aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945. Japan’s surrender effectively ended World War II, the most devastating global conflict in history.
VJ Day is also celebrated on August 15, the date Japan announced its surrender, or because of time zone differences, August 14, the date Japan’s surrender was announced worldwide.
Did You Know…Rhode Island is the only U.S. state that recognizes VJ Day as an official holiday. Officially named Victory Day in Rhode Island, the holiday is observed on the second Monday of August.
