Jackie Robinson Named Rookie of the Year (1947)

On this day in 1947 (the same year he broke the color barrier in baseball by becoming the first black Major League Baseball player since the 1880s), Jackie Robinson was named Rookie of the Year. Though the award had been created in 1940, it didn’t become national until 1947, making Robinson the inaugural winner of the award.

Did you know…In 1987, the 40th anniversary of Robinson’s breaking the color barrier, the National and American League Rookie of the Year Awards were renamed the Jackie Robinson Award in honor of Robinson and his legacy.
