World Suicide Prevention Day

On average, almost 3,000 people commit suicide daily. For every person who completes a suicide, 20 more may attempt to end their lives.”

- World Health Organization (WHO)

September 10, 2012 marks the 10th anniversary of World Suicide Prevention Day, an initiative organized by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP), with the help of WHO, to raise the awareness that suicide is “a major preventable cause of premature death,” prevent suicide and suicidal behavior, increase education about suicide awareness, decrease the stigma associated with suicide and the silence that surrounds it, and remember lost loved ones.

Become a part of the initiative to spread awareness and save lives by taking five minutes to get involved and become informed. Here you’ll find informational and educational materials, tools to help you learn about suicide and suicide prevention and spread awareness, and resources for helping someone who is struggling and for reaching out if you are concerned for yourself.

The IASP also encourages you to light a candle at 8:00 p.m. on September 10 in remembrance of lost loved ones and the survivors of suicide and to show your support for suicide prevention.
