July 2 – I Forgot Day

July 2, I Forgot Day

July 2, I Forgot Day

Today is another one of those holidays that you’ll probably forget. That’s right, an entire holiday dedicated to remembering what we’ve forgotten and remembering what not to forget in the future.

In honor of this day here’s some things we’ve forgotten:

I once forgot that I was wearing my contact lenses while washing my face. I went in the bathroom to remove them and got distracted in between eyes. I started brushing my teeth, then washed my face. I slipped my glasses on and then looked up in the mirror and everything was blurry. I took my glasses off and cleaned them off thinking that there was a smudge I missed. My vision was the same whether or not my glasses were on or off. I then tried splashing water in my eyes thinking I must have something stuck in my eye. After my third round of water and eye drops, a feeling of panic started to grow, I was going to have to go into the doctor and hope nothing was seriously wrong with my eyes. How would I be able to read, watch TV, or play video games? What if I had to wear an eye patch?

Thankfully before the tears started I realized that I was still wearing one contact lens. ” -Sarah

I used to fly back and forth from Little Rock Ark to Dallas Tx to visit my dad.  One weekend my mom got me ready, packed my bag, drove me an hour to the airport, put me on a plane by myself and sent me to Dallas like she has many times before.  I’m like 7 years old.  I get to Dallas and no one is there to pick me up. I am sitting behind the counter at Southwest airlines for like an hour before they call my mom and she realized that she had forgotten that my dad’s weekend was the following weekend.  She sent me on the wrong weekend and no one was waiting for me. Luckily my aunt lived not far from the airport and I got to spend the weekend with her. ” -Misty

When I was a kid I went to the movies with my cousins.  There were 8 of us kids.  We got half way home when we realized we were one kid short.  Sooooo…. We circled back to get him.  He was playing video games in the lobby. He never knew we left!” – Jessica M.

When I was about 5 years old, my mom took us to Sears in Hancock Center to buy school clothes for my big sisters.  I used to love to hide under the racks of clothing while they shopped.  Apparently, I hid a little too well.  After checking out, my mom moved on to the next store, Kinney’s Shoes to buy shoes for my sisters. I finally came out of my hiding place to discover I couldn’t find my sisters or my mom.  A nice lady at the store found me wandering around and took me to the central checkout station.  She began to page my mom over the intercom.  Since my mom was in an entirely different store, she didn’t hear the pages.  It took her a few minutes (to me it felt like hours) to realize she was missing one of her little chickadees. Retracing her steps, she made her way back to Sears.  As she came racing in the door, she saw me, sitting quite contentedly with several sweet store clerks keeping me entertained.” -Christi

The Perfect Command Center

With summer winding down and the school year ramping up, this perfect time to reorganize anything that didn’t work for you last year. One of the easiest ways to keep your house organized is to have a functional command center that meets the needs of your family.

The first step is to figure out where your problem areas are. For my house, it happened to be the kitchen island. My husband and I would walk in through the garage and just drop everything there until it became useless as actual counter space in the kitchen. Find where you family currently dumps everything because that will make it easier to retrain and replace the bad habit. Luckily, we had some nice wall space just past the island that was begging to be used!

Once you know where you want your command center, the next step is to identify the needs of your family. Since we don’t have any children yet, our needs were pretty basic. We needed a place to put the mail, Groupons, coupons, a whiteboard for notes and honey-do lists, a place for pens and markers, and of course, a calendar. We also needed a place to keep our keys and sunglasses, but I put that closer to the door instead of with the command center itself. Some other things you might consider for your command center would be a place for kids to hang their backpacks, an in/out wall file for homework and paperwork from the school, chore charts, a shopping list (we have an awesome magnetic shopping list hanging on our fridge), or a cork board.

Now that you have your needs addressed and your space assigned, it is time to find products to create your perfect command center. You can go with an all-in-one system that allows you to simply snap what you need onto a preformed back, or you can do a hodge-podge approach. Martha Stewart has a great system if you want everything to be identical, but I wanted something that matched the look of my kitchen and dining area a little more.

I measured off my space, and because I am a bit OCD, created a template in Photoshop to show the available space. Another way to do this would be to map it out on graph paper, This will allow you to play with what elements will fit where before you start hanging anything. My first priority was finding a calendar that I loved. We don’t necessarily want our calendar to feature any particular artwork, so I opted for a monthly desk pad style instead. Before I created the command center, we had a monthly magnetic calendar on our fridge, so I knew we already liked the format. I found the Kathy Davis Desk Pad that matched my color scheme and planned the other elements around the size of my calendar. A close second was the Bold Blossoms Monthly/Weekly Wall Calendar, but we didn’t need that much space for just the two of us. Knowing how much space I had left to work with. I found some galvanized steel containers that I then spray-painted a metallic bronze to match my fixtures. I also found a cheap 12×12 whiteboard and bought a simple unfinished wooden frame. I used the same metallic bronze spray-paint and it worked wonderfully.

The last step is something to claim it as your own. I opted for a wooden sign that had our name and the year we were married, but I have also seen some cute command centers with a simple initial that matched. Whatever your style is, this identifier will round out the command center and make you smile every time you look at it.

Elizabeth’s Birthday

Happy birthday to an important member of the Calendars.com team, Elizabeth!

Elizabeth has been with Calendars.com for nearly six years and runs the Facebook page and blog for DogBreedStore.com, our sister site. She also manages the Calendars Ebay store and comparison shopping engines.

I love Calendars, canines, caffeine and my Mac – not necessarily in that order.  I balance work with volunteering, training dogs, gardening and cooking. My favorite travel destination is home, where I am surrounded by ten beautiful acres of wildflowers and two adorable and adoring (mainly at dinner time) Bulldogs who think I am an absurdly good cook.

Here are a few of her staff picks, but see Elizabeth’s complete selection on our Staff Picks Page!
