Established in 1971 by the U.S. Congress, Women’s Equality Day commemorates the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. Women’s Equality Day is also meant to raise awareness of remaining inequalities while acknowledging and honoring women’s continuing efforts toward full equality. Every year, the current U.S. President proclaims August 26 as Women’s Equality Day to emphasize the holiday’s significance.
