Nicole Kidman’s Birthday

Critically-acclaimed actress Nicole Kidman was born on June 20, 1967 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Her parents are Australian, so she was granted dual citizenship for both the United States and Australia. At the age of four, Kidman moved back to Australia with her parents, which is where she spent the majority of her youth.

Following immense national success from an Australian Christmas movie, Nicole Kidman was catapulted into stardom. She has since acted in many popular feature films, including: Days of Thunder (1990), Far and Away (1992), Batman Forever (1995), Eyes Wide Shut (1999), Moulin Rouge! (2001), and The Stepford Wives (2004), to name a few.

Nicole Kidman has two adopted children of whom she shares custody with her ex-husband, actor Tom Cruise. Kidman has two other children with her current husband and popular country singer, Keith Urban.

Sydney Harbour Bridge Opens

The Sydney Harbour Bridge opened on March 19, 1932. It is a steel arch bridge that connects the Sydney central business district (CBD) to the North Shore. It extends acrossSydneyHarbourand is able to accommodate trains, cars, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic.

Construction on the arch began on October 2, 1928. Prior to its opening to the public, the bridge was tested for three weeks to ensure safety. It is heavily debated by Australians whether the Sydney Harbour Bridge (nicknamed The Coathanger) or the Sydney Opera House is the true icon of the city.

What is Australia Day? (January 26th)

Flag of Australia On January 26, 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip raised the British flag at Sydney Cove, establishing the first colony in Australia, after the First Fleet of 11 convict ships had arrived. A public holiday and community day, Australia Day celebrates the anniversary of this event as well as Australia’s diverse society and landscape, history and achievements and commitment to continuing to make Australia a better place.

Community celebrations on Australia Day include flag raisings, presentation of community awards, barbecues  and fireworks and other fun events and activities. Citizenship ceremonies are also held for new citizens.
