Bagpipe Appreciation Day

July 27 is a day to celebrate the sounds of this quintessential Scottish instrument.

The bagpipe features three pipes emerging from a bag typically made of elk or sheep skin. This bag holds air, and when squeezed, releases the air through the pipes. The bagpiper uses a fourth pipe to control the pitch, much like a flute or oboe. The result is a one-of-a-kind sound used in weddings and funerals for centuries.
