Clerihew Day

July 10 is Clerihew Day!

This holiday celebrates Edmund Clerihew Bentley, author and journalist, best known for developing a type of poetry verse called (what else?) the clerihew.

A clerihew is a four lined poem that consists of two rhyming couplets which follow the AABB rhyming scheme. This style of poetry most often features biographical context with a humorous twist. Here is one of Bentley’s most famous clerihews:

Sir Humphrey Davy

Abominated gravy.

He lived in the odium

Of having discovered Sodium.

Celebrate Clerihew Day by attempting one of your own!

Teddy Bear Picnic Day

In 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt refused to shoot a small bear while on a hunting trip. The Washington Post created a cartoon in the paper about the incident, and toy store owners Morris and Rose Michtom decided to capitalize on the event. They created a stuffed bear and asked permission from the President to call the animal a Teddy Bear, and just like that an iconic toy was born.

July 10 is a day to celebrate our Teddy Bears and the fond memories they invoke by having a picnic with our furry friends. So, gather up your old collection, throw a blanket on the ground, and enjoy a good old-fashioned picnic with your Teddy Bears. The good news is you don’t even have to pack extra food!

It was raining today, but we still had a Teddy Bear Picnic in the office while listening to the classic song.

National Pina Colada Day

July 10 is National Pina Colada Day!Piña Colada

A pina colada, which translates into “strained pineapple” in Spanish, is a rum-based cocktail that originated from Puerto Rico. Other core ingredients include cream of coconut and pineapple juice.

There’s no better time to celebrate this refreshing, tropical beverage than smack dab in the middle of the summertime. Whip up a blended or shaken pina colada, garnish with a tropically fragrant pineapple slice, lounge next to the pool and pretend the splash of water is the rush of waves on a secluded beach. Check out one of the recipes below!

And if you’re feeling really festive – or just really like pineapple and coconut flavored foods and drinks – bake a Pina Colada Cake!
