Giorgio Armani’s Birthday

World Population Day

On July 11, 1987, the world population hit five billion. To mark this milestone and raise awareness of global population issues, such as the human right to plan a family, and their impact on development and the environment, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) designated July 11 as World Population Day in 1989.

Each year, World Population Day is centered around a specific theme and issue. World Population Day 2012 focuses on “Universal Access to Reproductive Health Services”:

Reproductive health is at the very heart of development and crucial to delivering the UNFPA vision – a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.”

Celebrate World Population Day by educating yourself on population issues, particularly reproductive health and rights.

Global reproductive health and issues by the numbers:

1.8 billion: Number of adolescents reaching their reproductive years – many without the knowledge, skills, and services needed to protect themselves.
4: Number of people who contract HIV every minute and the number of people who die of AIDS every minute.
$9: Amount you can donate to UNFPA to ensure that one couple can delay pregnancy for two years via oral contraceptives. Learn more at UNFPA’s support page.
200 million+: Number of women worldwide who want to use safe and effective family planning methods, whether to avoid or delay pregnancy, but can’t due to lack of information, services, and/or support.
50 million (out of 190 million/year): Number of pregnant women  who have an abortion due to unwanted pregnancy – many of which are unsafe. According to UNFPA, 74,000 women die each year due to complications associated with unsafe abortions.
2015: The year UNFPA hopes to make universal reproductive health a reality.

National Blueberry Muffin Day

Muffin - NCI Visuals OnlineJuly 11 is National Blueberry Muffin Day!

National Blueberry Muffin Day isn’t just a day to celebrate America’s favorite muffin, but it’s another way to celebrate the blueberry for National Blueberry Month. (July was first established as National Blueberry Month by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1999 and again in 2003).

Muffins may not be the healthiest breakfast food, but when you add blueberries, you’ll reap the superfruit’s astounding health benefits. To make your blueberry muffins even healthier, reduce the sugar or swap it for honey and use applesauce in place of butter.

Half the fun of eating a blueberry muffin is baking it yourself, so bake a batch yourself instead of heading to the bakery. However, you are excused from baking your own blueberry muffins if you and your kitchen have trouble getting along. We certainly wouldn’t want you to ruin this delicious day with a kitchen mishap!

Blueberry Muffins – It may not seem like it, but the yogurt and grated lemon peel in this recipe make a huge difference.

To Die for Blueberry Muffins – Large, bakery-style muffins with a sugar and cinnamon crumb topping.

Morning Glory Blueberry Muffins – A hearty breakfast muffin with the added ingredient of mashed sweet potatoes.
