Groundhog Day – February 2nd

This Wednesday is Groundhog Day! No, it’s not a celebration of the 1993 film starRK 0808 278 Marmota monaxring Bill Murray. On Groundhog Day, we find out if we’ll have an early spring or if we’ll face the cold for a few more weeks.

What is Groundhog Day?

A tradition dating back to 1887, thousands travel to Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania on February 2 to await Punxsutawney Phil’s, the official Groundhog Day groundhog, winter weather prediction. As the legend goes, the groundhog awakes from his winter hibernation and pops out of his burrow on February 2 to look for his shadow. If he sees his shadow, there will be another six weeks of winter. If the groundhog doesn’t see his shadow, there will be an early spring.

The Groundhog Day tradition stems from German roots and similar traditions associated with Candlemas Day.

When is Groundhog Day?

Groundhog Day falls on February 2 of each year.
