The Professional Football Hall of Fame officially opened on September 7, 1963. It stands as an acknowledgment to the outstanding players that have worked hard to make professional football the most popular American sport.
The Hall of Fame is located in Canton, Ohio because the American Professional Football Association (today, the National Football League or NFL) was founded there. What started as a 19,000 square foot facility has grown into a whopping 118,000 square foot compound.
The Professional Football Hall of Fame’s mission statement is “To honor, preserve, educate and promote.” Inductees are selected by a 44-member board that is comprised of football writers, and football players become eligible after being in retirement from the sport for at least 5 years.
