July 19 is National Daiquiri Day!
The daiquiri is a classic cocktail made up of rum, lime juice and sugar, though other flavors and ingredients, such as fruit, are often added. American mining engineer Jennings Cox supposedly invented the daiquiri in 1905 while working in the town of Daiquiri, near Santiago, Cuba. According to legend, he came up with this popular tropical cocktail when he ran out of gin while entertaining guests. However, since all three ingredients of the original daiquiri are produced in abundance in Cuba, it’s very likely that that the cocktail had already existed.
